Surgical innovation and advances in technology have resulted in major developments in minimal invasive surgery over the last two decades. The Division of Colorectal Surgery, Department of Surgery, The University of Hong Kong has been at the forefront of this field and is continuing to develop new and innovative procedures to improve patients' well-being.

Professor Law Wai-Lun, Chief of the Division of Colorectal Surgery, is recognised for his work in innovative and minimal invasive surgery and conducting robotic operations. These procedures can significantly improve the postoperative recovery of patients and reduce any incision-associated complications.

As part of his research in this field Professor Law is currently looking into natural orifice surgery that will minimise surgical access and will leave no scars. This type of procedure will also improve patients' quality of care and recovery time.  He has also been active in developing advanced laparoscopic techniques, transanal endoscopic surgery, and natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery.

Professor Law is also a key teaching surgeon and is passing on his knowledge to the next generation of surgeons. Using the latest state-of-the-art equipment, including robotics, in the Department's Surgical Skills Centre he is able to provide realistic and practical training in minimal invasive surgery methods and techniques.

Professor Law graduated from Faculty of Medicine, HKU in 1987. He obtained the fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1991. He was then trained in colorectal surgery and received his overseas training in Houston, Texas. He was conferred the degree of Master of Surgery in 2001 and the research was on surgical treatment for rectal cancer. Professor Law was appointed as Clinical Professor of Surgery at The University of Hong Kong in 2008. Currently he is the Chief of Division of Colorectal Surgery at Queen Mary Hospital. He is also the Director of Skills Development Centre in the Department of Surgery.

Professor Law is a member of numerous professional societies. He was on the Education Resources Committee of the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons and the Membership Committee of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons. He is currently the Secretary-General of the International Society for Digestive Surgery and a committee member of the International Society of Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgery.

Professor Law has authored over 120 articles in peer-reviewed journals and has given numerous lectures, both in Hong Kong and overseas. He is currently on the editorial board of about 10 journals includingSurgical Practice. He is also a regular reviewer of numerous scientific journals including Annals of Surgery, British Journal of Surgery,Diseases of the Colon and Rectum, Surgical Endoscopy and Annals of Surgical Oncology.
