Endowed Professorships are established in support of distinguished professors for academic purposes. It is the most significant award bestowed upon academics within the University.
The Professorship may be perpetually named in honour of a donor, corporation or other honouree(s) as decided by the donor.
The donor may designate an Endowed Professorship for an academic area of his/her choice. All professors in HKU are eligible for the Scheme. An Advisory Committee ensures appointments to the Endowed Professorships shall be made in accordance with established University procedures.
A Gala Inauguration Ceremony will be held in honour of the donors and the Endowed Professors. Donors of Endowed Professorships will be acknowledged in a hall of honour of the University. The Holder of an Endowed Professorship will carry his/her full title on all occasions, in all academic publications, news and international interactions. Stationery will carry the full title. The donor will be kept abreast of the academic achievements of the Endowed Professor, who will have close personal contact with the donor.
An Endowed Professorship is created with a minimum donation of HK$10 million. The donation will be matched dollar-for-dollar by the University to form a permanent endowment of at least $20 million, generating perpetual income to support the designated discipline.
