Austrian economist, Ludwig von Mises, once said, “Economics deals with society' s fundamental problems,” and it is true that no serious centre of learning can afford to forgo a good economics department.

The University of Hong Kong has taken this sentiment to heart and has established a long tradition of teaching and learning in economics. This has duly contributed to the enhancement of economic literacy in the territory and to the development of the economy in Hong Kong.

Professor Wing Suen graduated from this University in 1985, and went on to obtain his Doctorate degree from University of Washington in 1988.

After completing post-doctoral research at the University of Chicago, Professor Suen returned to his alma mater in 1989, and currently holds the position of Chair of Economics at the School of Economics and Finance. He has also held research or teaching positions at Simon Fraser University, Harvard University, and the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

In the world of economics Professor Suen is considered one of Asia-Pacific’s foremost applied theorists. His research centres on applied microeconomic theory and he has conducted excellent work on efficiency and early contracting in two-sided matching markets. One of his current research areas looks at the transmission of information across individuals with divergent beliefs and motives. He also maintains an interest in the Hong Kong labour market and is researching the effects of public housing on internal migration, travel-to-work patterns, and labour supply decisions.

Professor Suen has published two books and more than forty academic papers and book chapters. He is an associate editor of two journals - the Pacific Economic Review and Economics Journal – and is a former member of the Executive Committee of the Hong Kong Economic Association.

His public service includes membership in the Humanities, Social Sciences and Business Studies Panel of the Research Grants Council, since 2005, and programme leader of the Human Resources Research Programme of the Hong Kong Institute of Economics and Business Strategy.
