As one of the world's leading financial centres, Hong Kong is a major source of funding for Mainland Chinese enterprises. China-based companies, alone, account for half of recent initial public offerings. The Faculty of Business and Economics plays a unique role in contributing to the study of finance and its importance to China.

Professor Eric C Chang is currently the Director and Chair of Finance of the School of Business. He is also Director and Founder of the Centre of Financial Innovation and Risk Management, at The University of Hong Kong, and a visiting Professor at Fudan University of Shanghai.

Originally trained as a civil engineer he received his BS degree from National Cheng Kung University in Taiwan, and his PhD in finance from Purdue University, in United States. He began his academic career at the University of Iowa, moving to the University of Maryland in 1986, and becoming a full professor in 1994. The following year, he joined the DuPree College of Management at the Georgia Institute of Technology as the Invesco Endowed Chair Professor of International Finance and joined The University of Hong Kong as Chair of Finance in 1998.

Professor Chang's research is in international finance, capital asset pricing, derivative securities, risk management, behaviour finance, and mutual fund management. He has recently focused on the impact of short-sale constraints on asset prices. Studies by his team have offered valuable empirical evidence and theoretical insight into the heated international debate on this controversial regulation.

He has published articles in many leading international journals and is on the editorial board of several academic journals.

Professor Chang conducts executive education programmes for top MNCs and has served as consultant to key financial bodies including the Commodity Futures Trading Commission of the U.S, the Securities Exchange Commission of Taiwan and United Nations Development Programme. He has also offered his expert consultancy to several Asian financial private institutions.

Between 1994 to 2006, Professor Chang was awarded five Best Paper Awards by International Conferences in Finance, as well as Universities in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and the USA. During the same period he was awarded two Best Teacher Awards.
