Summer Issue, 2013
75 Alumni Networks HKUAA of Victoria, Australia www.alumni.hku.hk/hkuaavic On February 17, HKUAA of Victoria members celebrated Chinese NewYear on a typical, hot Aussie summer day. Alumni were busy chatting, eating and most importantly, thinking. There were 20 ‘riddles on a lantern’ ( 燈謎 ) for members to solve. The occasion was made more memorable as alumni Thomas 潘 烱 棠 (BA 1960) and Athena Poon 周平章 (BA 1960) celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. In fact, there is no single formal word to describe this practice; rather the word is borrowed to explain the concept. Avoid eating foods that are “too much” In most cases, Chinese medicine practitioners suggest people not to eat foods that are “too much” in nature. Foods that are too sweet, too spicy, too oily, too strongly avoured, deep fried, cold or raw are not recommended. All Chinese medicine (herbal tea) have their own nature and avour, and their particular character contributes to the ef cacy of the treatment. Foods that are “too much” in nature can interfere with the effect of the medicine. Different Chinese medicine practitioners have different views on dieting Some suggest that oranges are not suitable for those who have cough. Some suggest that beef is not good for eczema. Some think that they are no problem. Different sects of Chinese medicine have different opinions, as do western doctors. Patients should follow the dietary advice of their Chinese medicine doctors on food restrictions. It is also a part of the treatment in Chinese medicine.
