The University of Hong Kong established the first Paediatric Department in Hong Kong on July 1, 1964. Over the years, the Department of Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine has trained many outstanding pediatricians locally, contributed significantly to the improvement of child health and pioneered a number of special services for children in Hong Kong. Currently, the Department is recognised as a pre-eminent international paediatric centre in Asia striving for the health and well-being of children and youths.

Professor Godfrey Chan is a clinical professor and Head of the Department of Paediatrics & Adolescent Medicine. After he joined the Department of Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine in 1989, he then pursued further training at the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, USA as a Pediatric Hematology/Oncology fellow from 1993 to 1996. Professor Chan engages actively in teaching and training related to paediatrics. He has trained more than 20 post-graduate (PhD & MPhil) students and has been actively promoting the collaboration between paediatric colleagues in the mainland and Hong Kong by organising the Guangdong-HK-Shenzhen tri-cities paediatric oncology meeting since 2006. This regular academic exchange involves more than 15 hospitals in China and Hong Kong.

Professor Chan is a renowned clinical expert in the fields of paediatric neurogenic cancers and stem cell transplantation. He is known for his leading role in clinical care for patients with brain tumors and neuroblastoma internationally. For the stem cells transplantation, he is one of the pioneers in Asia and has been applying haematopoietic stem cells, including bone marrow, for transplantation of various serious childhood illnesses since 1992. In laboratory research, his main focus is on the biology of the mesenchymal stem cell, in particular its immunological role and interaction with other extrinsic factors. He and his team are investigating how their findings can be applied clinically. Among them, this includes the use of novel bioengineered technology to facilitate the delivery of stem cells for tissue regeneration and organs repair. He also investigates how various disease processes such as inflammation or cancer inside human body may affect the biology of the stem cells.

He was awarded the International Fellowship by Advance in Neuroblastoma Research in 2006, the Endeavor Executive Award by Australian Government in 2008 and the Best Clinical Research Award of International Society of Pediatric Oncology in 2009. He also received the King's College-HKU Fellowship in 2010 and the Asian Society of Pediatric Research Award of Pediatric Academic Societies in 2011 for his achievement in pediatric clinical and laboratory researches.

Professor Chan is a regular contributor to medical publications and is the chief editor of the Hong Kong Journal of Paediatrics. He has accepted numerous invitations to be a keynote speaker, speaker and participant in talks, seminars, conferences and symposiums on his areas of research in Hong Kong and around the world.

He has been serving as chairman or office bearer of many local and international learned societies, including the Advance in Neuroblastoma Research, VIVA-Asia Pediatric BMT Consortium, International Bone Marrow Transplantation Research Working Committee, Asian Pediatric Hematology Oncology Group, National Committee of Pediatric Oncology, Federation of Medical Societies of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Paediatric Society, Hong Kong Paediatric Haematology Oncology Study Group, etc.. He is also a Board Member of the International Neuroblastoma Tumor Bank Taskforce. He is currently the Chairman of VIVA-Asia Pediatric BMT Consortium and Vice Chairman of the local organizing committee for the International Society of Paediatric Oncology (SIOP) Meeting of 2013.
