The University of Hong Kong has long been renowned internationally for its clinical expertise and research in the area of hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery, particularly in liver cancer and liver transplantation because of the high incidence of liver cancer and prevalence of hepatitis B infection in the region. Its successes are studied by surgeons around the globe.

Professor Lo, who graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Hong Kong in 1985, is one of the world's leading specialists in liver transplantation and hepatobiliary surgery. The Liver Transplant Team at the University developed rapidly into the only dedicated liver transplant centre in Hong Kong and one of most successful programs in Asia.

Professor Lo's team pioneered the application of living donor liver transplantation in adult patients by performing the world's first adult right lobe liver transplant in 1996. This innovation helped overcome a crisis of organ shortages and has had a major impact on the development and practice of liver transplantation world-wide. With further refinement of techniques, the team has continued to achieve the world's highest success rate in this life-saving operation. Surgeons from overseas frequently visit the University to observe this operation and Professor Lo and his team have been invited to numerous institutions abroad to demonstrate the skill.

A prolific scholar, Professor Lo has published over 220 articles in international journals and numerous book chapters. He was awarded the James IV Travelling Fellowship, a prestigious award for him to visit 9 world-class institutions as Visiting Professor in 2002. In 2004, he received the Croucher Foundation Senior Medical Research Fellowship to support his research in the prevention of hepatitis B after liver transplantation. He serves as associate editor, editorial board member and reviewer of many high-impact international journals. He has also served in many professional organizations and is currently the President of the Hong Kong Society of Transplantation and the President of the International Society for Digestive Surgery.
