Microcosm of an Era: Ho Kai, HKU, and the Voices that Ushered in Modern China

About the exhibition
This exhibition, generously donated by collector Mr Yu Jiang, is more than a display of books and book plates — it’s a spiritual journey into a transformative era. Through these yellowed pages, we revisit a time of East-West clashes and change, centered on the complex figure of Ho Kai — a key founder of Hong Kong College of Medicine, the predecessor of HKU.
One highlighted item of the exhibition is the precious original copy of Xin Zheng Zhen Quan (A True Explanation of New Policies), co-authored by Ho Kai and Woo Lai-woon. The book became a vital resource for both reformers and revolutionaries in late Qing China. Ho Kai played a pivotal role as a behind-the-scenes supporter in Sun Yat-sen’s early revolutionary career.
Xin Zheng Zhen Quan embodies the “conceptual draft” of HKU spirit: embracing both Chinese and Western knowledge. The significance of this university is not only rooted in its academic achievements but also in its position at the heart of China’s most painful yet magnificent ideological storms — serving as a silent but steadfast “source of light.” This book is a microcosm of an era.
The exhibition will be open to the public from July 22 to August 5, 2026, at the ground floor lobby of the Run Run Shaw Tower at The University of Hong Kong. Following this period, the exhibition will be moved to the HKU Main Library for display.
