Class Notes Stephen Ng 吳呂南 (BA 1976) Dr Ng, an active member in the Islington Chinese Association in the UK and an Exco member of HKUAA, UK Chapter, shares a piece of poetry reminiscing about the HKUWritingWorkshop andTheYouth Literary Awards. Based on his observations of how patients respond to a physician’s thinking processes among the diverse cultures of Hong Kong, the US and the Chinese Mainland, Professor Yu delivered an inspiring talk entitled “How Doctors Think?” at HKU in April. This presentation was a philosophical and psychological critique of how a doctor arrives at clinical judgments, and whether new generations of doctors are equipped with a desired quality of the thinking process. Professor Yu told the audience that each medical case is karma that provides an archetype for the next patient, and doctors should regard “seeing a patient as seeing an object of art”. Professor Yu, who is the Emeritus Professor of Medicine, Rheumatology, UCLA, has practiced as an internist in a municipal hospital in Qingdao for the past three years.
